What's the purpose of the Squires?

The Laws and Rules of the Columbian Squires states the object of the program to be: "the spiritual, cultural, civic, social and physical improvement of its members, and the development

of their leadership qualities."  The KofC magazine has described the aims of the Columbian Squires: "....to prepare Catholic young men to become leaders among their fellow citizens."  Since the founding of the Columbian Squires, these intentions have been steadfastly pursued.
Currently, leadership training takes place in four activity areas:  Spiritual, Circle, Service and Membership.
The Spiritual activities committee of the circle is responsible for planning programs of a religious nature, like retreats, visits to seminaries, vocations-related programs, monthly Squire-parent Masses and others.
The Circle activities committee is responsible for planning programs that promote brotherhood among members and promote the image of the circle in the community via public relations efforts.
The Service activities committee is responsible for planning volunteer involvement programs for the circle within the community.  Food drives, fund raising events for local, national and international charities, visits to shut-ins and the elderly, and similar programs fall under the jurisdiction of the service activities committee.
The Membership activities committee is in charge of all circle membership campaigns and the recruitment and retention of members.  Committee members should encourage support and participation among all members in this important function.  The goal of this committee is simple:  make every member an active recruiter for the Circle.

Brother Barnabas founded the Squires to "give a young man the greatest possible help in making himself the sort of Christian citizen he wishes to become and we so urgently need."  Basically this means that the Squires help young men become more mature, responsible and self-confident by coordinating and participating in a wide variety of service, social, spiritual and family activities.

Young men get out of the Squires what they put into it!  If they don't attend meetings, help plan and participate in activities, they will not benefit much from their membership.  The Squires program gives the members the opportunity to develop leadership and teamwork skills by using the talents that God has given them.  They form new friendships and do things that they might have never done before.  Most importantly, they learn more about being an active Catholic.

There are several awards given to individual Squires and to the Circles throughout the Order.  The local circle presents the Squire of the Year award to an outstanding member who has participated in the circle programs and exemplified the spirit and dedication of a true squire.

The Corp D'Elite Award is earned by Circle who plan and complete at least four activities in each of the four major categories (Spiritual, Circle, Service and Membership).  This award is presented by the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus.

The Brother Barnabas Award is presented by the Supreme Council to circles who are judged to have planned one of the top 25 original activities throughout the Order.
